Many countries offer basic banking services through their postal systems. The United States Post Office Department offered such a service in the past. Called the United States Postal Savings System it was discontinued in 1967. A lender may charge a finance charge for each deferred deposit loan or payday loan that may not exceed 20 percent of the first $300 loaned plus seven and one-half percent of any amount loaned in excess of $300.
